Christopher Titus runs in two modes when it comes to his stand-up specials, personal and political, and those two modes alternate with programmed regularity. The man’s first, third and fifth specials were about recovering from being set up to fail in the world of relationships and love. In his seventh, he’s now diving into a very simple question: where’s the line between giving children a better life than their parents and not giving them the skills they need to succeed?
Throughout the writing of Born with a Defect, Titus claimed the show was meant to be an argument for why no one should ever have children, but in actually, that comes off as more of a funny aside. In reality, the show is an acknowledgment of what’s to come should one embark on a parental path, something felt no clearer than with the closing seconds before credits roll. Titus is trying as hard as he can to make it clear children are a great idea until real, then they become a challenge unlike anything ever faced.
You will try and try and try, but in the end your only job is to not raise someone worse than you. Succeed there and you’re job is done. But, while the result is simple, the path to get there is complex. If after hearing everything the famed comic says in the special you still want to have children, then maybe, maybe you are ready to face the challenge. But, that’s only true if you want it and can accept the realities of such a prospect - not the fantasy.
Of course, that’s the lesson of the special, not the execution. Born with a Defect brings Titus’ well known stylings and humor to a new topic that extends beyond himself or the world at large. No longer is Titus’ act about his failings as a single person - as that ran its course with Voice in my Head, or the failings of the culture - as seen in his political specials. This time, Titus is addressing the failings of a single societal system that says one is complete unless they have a family.
What Titus is trying to get across in Born with a Defect is the idea of what it truly means to lead a descent life. Whether its being a parent or the owner of a hot-rod, be the person that makes you your best self, so long as that best self isn’t a self-righteous snob unable to see beyond the three feet in front of you. There’s nothing wrong with wanting your life to end with parenthood, but don’t let the world tell you it’s the only way. That’s what Titus is trying to say.
As the special approaches its end, Titus works to bring the audience back from what seems like a pit of despair - albeit a funny one. He works to offer a light at the end of the tunnel. Hope that you will realize sooner than you think you’ve done things right as a parent should you opt to go down that road. The show may have started as a warning, but it ends on a message: be a parent, don’t be a parent. It doesn’t matter. Generate public key from private key rsa openssl.
